The next day, when Sam and Fred had time to compose themselves, they had something to eat.

Then Sam got down to business. “We’re barely 50 kilometers from the Area 51 academy. If we leave now, we can get there today. Hopefully, the place won’t be deserted, and we’ll be able to get in there and determine what we’ll be able to send against the Krean.”

Shawn replied, “If we’re going to trek across 50 kilometers of desert, we’re gonna need to be alert. We have Krean landing everywhere, and there might be some landing between us and the academy.”

Sam nodded thoughtfully and smiled slightly—an expression that Fred hadn’t seen for years. The result was staggering. She looked stunning.

“Some things,” Fred mused silently, “never change.”

Sam’s voice broke through his thoughts. “After you.”

He focused on her again and saw that she was gesturing for him to lead the way. Shawn, meanwhile, was staring at each of them with an interesting look in his eyes, like he knew what was going on. Fred mentally shook himself and smiled at her as he moved to the front of the group.
